Countdown Apps with AI-Generated Backgrounds for iPhone: 4 Apps Compared
Short answer: most iPhone countdown apps let you pick a photo from your library; only four on the US App Store generate the image for you from a description. They differ in three ways that matter: whether the image is made on the phone or on a server, whether it follows the countdown beyond the Home Screen widget (Lock Screen, Dynamic Island, StandBy), and what you pay. The table below covers all three.
What "AI background" actually means
Two different things get called an AI background, and they behave differently.
- On-device generation uses Apple's Image Playground, part of Apple Intelligence. Nothing leaves the phone, generation is free for the developer, and the style is Apple's illustrated look. It needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro and later) with the feature turned on.
- Server generation sends your text to an image model over the internet through the developer's server and returns a photo-style image. It works on any iPhone the app supports and can produce photoreal results, but the developer pays per image, which is why these apps put the feature in a paid tier, and your event description is sent to a third-party model.
DayDrop uses server generation through its own proxy, so no API keys live in the app and the event text is the only thing sent. CountPal describes "the power of Apple Intelligence" for its motivational lines and AI-generated backgrounds. Widget Countdown lists "library or AI-generated" backgrounds and requires iOS 26.
The four apps, compared
Figures are from the US App Store on October 7, 2026, via Apple's public lookup. "Where the image appears" is taken from each app's own description; if a surface isn't mentioned there, it's marked "not listed" rather than "no".
| App | Price | Rating (US) | How the image is made | Where the image appears | Last update |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DayDrop (Countdown Widget – DayDrop) | Free; AI backgrounds in Premium: $1.99/mo, $12.99/yr (1-month free trial), $24.99 lifetime | 4.76 · 21 ratings (83 worldwide) | Server generation from your event description; type a style like "soft pink watercolor" or pick a preset; Fill/Fit and crop controls | Home Screen widgets (4 sizes), Lock Screen widgets, Dynamic Island and Lock Screen Live Activity, StandBy, iPad, full-screen event view, share cards | Sep 20, 2026 |
| Countdown Widgets: CountPal | $3.99 one-time | no ratings yet | AI-generated artwork per event; Apple Intelligence for motivational lines | Home Screen widgets | Apr 4, 2026 |
| Widget Countdown (Bradley Cable) | Free, no subscription ("free and always will be") | 4.04 · 54 ratings | "Custom background images (from library or AI-generated)"; requires iOS 26 | Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets | Apr 24, 2026 |
| CountDown AI – Events | Free | no ratings yet | Not described beyond the name | Not listed | Nov 8, 2024 (v1.0) |
DayDrop's worldwide rating is 4.6 from 85 ratings across all storefronts. CountDown AI – Events has not been updated since its first release in November 2024, so treat it as unmaintained.
How to choose
- You want the generated image everywhere, not just on one widget: DayDrop is the only one of the four whose description covers Lock Screen widgets, the Dynamic Island and StandBy with the same image. That is its reason to exist, and it is a paid feature.
- You want to pay once and never again: CountPal at $3.99, or DayDrop's $24.99 lifetime if you also want the Live Activity.
- You refuse subscriptions and don't mind Apple's illustrated style: Widget Countdown, provided your iPhone runs iOS 26 and supports Apple Intelligence.
- You already have an AI wallpaper app: generate there, save to Photos, and use any countdown app that accepts a photo background. Slower, but free with the app you already have.
Prompts that produce a usable countdown background
A countdown widget overlays a large number and a label on the image, so the best backgrounds are calm, with an empty area and soft contrast. Three patterns that work well in DayDrop:
Avoid prompts that put text in the image (the model's lettering will fight the countdown number), busy crowds, and high-contrast patterns behind where the number sits. If the subject lands under the number, use the crop control to move it.
Privacy and cost, plainly
- What is sent: with server generation, your event description (and the style text) goes to the image model. Don't type anything you wouldn't put in a search box. DayDrop sends only that text; photos you pick from your library are not sent to the image model.
- Why it's paid: each server-generated image costs the developer real money, so unlimited free generation isn't sustainable. On-device generation is free to run but limited to newer iPhones and Apple's style.
- Who owns the image: you can save and share generated images from all four apps; check each app's terms for commercial use.
DayDrop generates a background from your event description and uses it on every surface: widgets, Lock Screen, Dynamic Island, StandBy. Free to download; AI backgrounds are in Premium with a one-month free trial on the yearly plan.

Which iPhone countdown apps have AI-generated backgrounds?
As of October 2026, four apps on the US App Store describe them: DayDrop, Countdown Widgets: CountPal, Widget Countdown by Bradley Cable, and CountDown AI – Events. The rest of the category uses photo-library backgrounds.
Does the AI background show on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, or only the Home Screen?
In DayDrop the image is attached to the event, so it appears on Home Screen widgets, the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island Live Activity, StandBy and the event's full-screen view. The other apps describe AI backgrounds for Home Screen widgets.
Is the image generated on my phone or on a server?
Image Playground apps generate on the device and need an Apple Intelligence iPhone. DayDrop calls an image model through its own server, so it works on any supported iPhone and your event text is sent to the model.
How much do AI backgrounds cost?
DayDrop: part of Premium at $1.99 a month, $12.99 a year with a one-month free trial, or $24.99 lifetime. CountPal: $3.99 paid app. Widget Countdown and CountDown AI – Events: free downloads. US prices, October 7, 2026.
Can I use an AI wallpaper app with a normal countdown app instead?
Yes. Generate the image, save it to Photos, and choose it as the photo background in any countdown app that supports photos. You lose the one-tap flow and per-event matching.
